When you hear Emotional Intelligence, or EQ, do you picture group hugs, soft voices, and a productivity bonfire?
Yeah. No.
EQ isn’t about being soft. It isn’t about lowering standards or letting things slide.
It’s about one thing: people smarts.
I stole that term (and proudly so) from Pat Lencioni’s The Ideal Team Player. He calls it “smarts,” but I felt it needed “people” in front to really land. Because that’s what we’re talking about – understanding people.
And as Simon Sinek puts it: “If you don’t understand people, you don’t understand business.”
BAM. Nailed it.
EQ is About Results, Not Rainbows
In recruitment, we need outcomes.
- Placements.
- Sales.
- Team performance.
But here’s the kicker: you don’t get those outcomes without understanding how to get your team on board.
That’s EQ in action.
EQ is knowing when your recruiter’s checked out because they’ve hit ten rejections in a row – and instead of cracking the whip, you sit them down, reset the focus, and light that fire again.
It’s not about coddling. It’s about being strategically human.
Productivity and
EQ? Yes, they go
together
Guess what? So do I.
EQ doesn’t cancel productivity – it fuels it.
It’s the difference between a team that wants to perform and one that’s just ticking boxes until Friday.
People smarts – EQ – lets you push for high performance without pushing people away.
Why Recruitment
Needs More EQ
(Not Less)
You deal with humans (candidates, clients, colleagues).
You face rejection, negotiation, emotion, and expectation – all in one day.
If you’re running a recruitment team (or are in one), EQ isn’t optional. It’s the tool that makes all the other tools work.
Without EQ, your phone screens feel robotic. Your interviews feel transactional. Your team culture? Flat.
With EQ? You build connection, trust, and real influence.
The Bottom Line
Emotional Intelligence is a power tool.
It’s what gets the best out of your team. It’s what helps you read the room, reset when things aren’t landing, and drive performance that sticks.
EQ isn’t soft.
It’s smart.
It’s people smart.
And in recruitment?
People smarts wins.
