Pipe Dreams Don’t Pay Bonuses
There’s a moment in every sales rep’s week when they look at their pipeline and think:
“Yep… this is going to be my best quarter ever.”
Then reality hits.
Half the “opportunities” are wishful thinking. Prospects who loved the concept but haven’t returned a call in months. Deals with no decision maker identified. No discovery meeting. No proposal on the table. No close in sight.
Let’s be blunt – your pipeline is your crystal ball. It’s the guiding light to your future sales success. And if the data in there isn’t honest and relevant, it’s not a crystal ball… it’s a snow globe. Looks nice. Completely useless.
The New Numbers Game
Back in the COVID “gravy train” years, pipelines were fat and close rates were high because buyers were hungry and deals moved faster. Those days are over.
Today, you need 2–4 times the volume in your pipeline compared to then. Why? Simple math.
If your monthly proposal-to-sale success rate is 25% and you need 10 closed deals, you’ll need:
- 40 opportunities at the proposal presented stage to get there.
If you don’t have those 40 in the works, there’s only one fix: prospect more.
And not “when you have time” prospecting. Daily. Consistent. Non-negotiable. Because the pipe doesn’t fill itself – and the pipe is your life.

Activity Before Optimism
Before you congratulate yourself on a “full” pipeline, check:
- Have you spoken to the real decision maker?
- Have you uncovered an urgent problem you can solve?
- Has a discovery meeting actually happened?
- Has a real proposal been sent?
- Has a next step been agreed?
If most of your deals can’t tick those boxes, you don’t have a pipeline problem. You have a prospecting and qualification problem.
My Final Word
A bloated, dishonest pipeline will lull you into complacency – right up until you miss target. A healthy, accurate, activity-driven pipeline is your sales survival plan.
And remember:

Stop dreaming. Start filling.
