My Story of Courage

Courage is not about having no fear—it’s about taking action despite fear. Often, the most transformative moments in our lives begin with a single bold step into the unknown.

I still remember the day I stepped outside the box and changed the trajectory of my life. At the time, I was in a senior role, but I was seeking something bigger, a career path that would challenge and inspire me.

One morning, I attended a recruitment industry breakfast where Malcolm Jackman, the National Sales Manager of ADIA, was speaking. His passion and leadership lit a spark in me. I knew I wanted to work with him and be part of his company.

Here’s where courage came into play: Instead of waiting for an opportunity to present itself, I picked up the phone and called the CEO directly. I told him I wanted to join his company.

I was terrified—what if they thought I was overstepping? What if they rejected me outright? But I pushed through my doubts. Long story short, I landed a role that didn’t even exist at the time. And eight years later, I became the CEO of that very company.

Now, imagine if I hadn’t made that call. If I had let fear hold me back, I would have missed out on a life-changing opportunity.

The Courage Framework: How to Take Bold Action

  1. Recognize the Opportunity
    • Pay attention to the moments that spark your curiosity or excitement. These are often the seeds of transformation.
  1. Reframe Fear
    • Instead of seeing fear as a stop sign, view it as a guide pointing toward growth. If it scares you, it’s probably worth exploring.
  1. Take the First Step
    • Break your goal into manageable actions. The first step is often the hardest but also the most critical.
  1. Accept Uncertainty
    • Understand that there are no guarantees. Courage requires embracing the unknown and trusting yourself to handle whatever comes next.
  1. Celebrate Small Wins
    • Each act of courage builds confidence and momentum. Acknowledge your bravery, no matter the outcome.

A Reflective Question for You

What bold step could you take today that scares you but might change the course of your life?

Remember, courage doesn’t mean you’re not afraid—it means you act despite the fear.

A Final Thought

“You can choose courage, or you can choose comfort, but you cannot choose both.” – Brené Brown

The next time you face a decision, ask yourself: Are you staying in your comfort zone, or are you stepping into the courage zone? That one step could lead to your life-changing moment.
